Safe sex for lesbians

There is a belief among some lesbians that because they have sex with women they don't have to worry about STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). Unfortunately, lesbians are not exempt and are just as susceptible to catching a STD as their straight counterparts. STDs are also more common in women that have had a history of sexual activity with male partners.

Some common STDs that can be transmitted between women:

HPV (human papillomavirus) - symptons include warts that occur on the anus and vagina. HPV is linked with cervical, uterine, anal, and vulvar cancer. Bacterial vaginosis - causes inflammation of vagina, fishy smell Yeast infection - causes irritation and inflammation Chlamydia - genital bacterial infection which causes discharge and labial irritation and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and fertility problems Genital herpes - viral infection that may cause vaginal sores, inflammation, pain, and itching; Cold sores - Herpes simplex that can cause oral lesions and can be transmitted through oral-genital, genital-genital, or genital-anal contact Hepatitis B and C - viral infection; causes inflammation of the liver HIV - AIDS Trichomoniasis - parasite causing burning, itching, redness, and discharge What do I do to protect myself from contracting these diseases?
The best way for sexually active single lesbians to protect themselves from STDs is to practice safe sex. This includes eliminating the exchange of bodily fluids, learning about safe sex between women and communicating honestly with your partner about your sexual history and STDs.

Low risk sexual activities for lesbians:

masturbation (touching self only) cybersex breast stimulation when not lactating massage and body rubbing kissing using a sex toy with a condom oral sex with dental dam such as plastic wrap or latex glove vaginal or anal contact with a latex glove High risk sexual activities for lesbians:

unprotected oral sex unprotected use or sharing of a toy without a condom tribadism (rubbing genitals together) fist or finger vaginal and/or anal penetration without latex glove The best protection for sexually active lesbians is to stay informed about safe sex and STDs and to get to know your prospective sexual partner before leaping into bed.
