More women than ever living on their own and without a spouse

While not a suprising fact for lesbians who have lived on the fringes of statistical research for some time due to social stigma, it is a statistic worth mentioning now that 51% of women in the U.S., straight or gay, are living on their own without a spouse or "other."

According to the 2005 American Community Survey, 15.2% of these women are living alone, 26% have a bachelor's degree or higher and their average income is $39,890. And in a New York Times article, William H. Frey, a demographer with a Washington research group said, ” women are less dependent on men or the institution of marriage” and that “younger women understand this better, and are preparing to live longer parts of their lives alone or with nonmarried partners."

These results should help alleviate that feeling of being all alone as a single lesbian, now there's proof that there are more of us women out there than we may have realized.
